On a weekend trip to the countryside, Laura, a piano student from Berlin, miraculously survives a car crash. 

Physically unhurt but deeply shaken, she is taken in by a local woman Betty - who witnessed the accident and now cares for Laura with a motherly devotion which gradually reveals itself to be more than it seems.

When Betty's husband and adult son also give up their initial resistance to Laura's presence, the four of them slowly build up a family-like routine finding a strange happiness together. 

But eventually as the summer ends, they can no longer ignore their past, and Laura decides she must get on with her own life.

“It’s the closest this country came to a revolution…”

A hundred years ago workers across Britain come out in support of over a million miners locked out of work for refusing to accept lower pay. 

This documentary account of the historic events of 1926 is based on interviews with many involved in the strike, including people on both sides of the dispute,  the film explores what happened against the political background of the time.

The strikers faced the full force of the establishment including Winston Churchill, upper class volunteers, the BBC, the police and the army. But in the end many believed they only failed because they were betrayed by their leadership in the TUC.

The failure of the strike was a hugely traumatic event. Many individuals came out the strike devastated.  Whole communities were left in pieces.

This historic documentary, made in 1974, was unearthed in the archive of  Platform Films and pieced together by Platform’s Chris Reeves.

In May 2021, a UK Home Office dawn raid in the Glasgow district of Pollokshields, one of Scotland’s most diverse neighbourhoods, prompted local residents to rush to the streets to stop the deportation of their neighbours.

Cinema Walks explore and celebrate everywhere the towns have shown films, from converted sheds to glorious picture palaces, from buildings still standing to those of which all flickering traces are long gone. Taking in local characters and social history, archive images and film clubs happening next week, visit each town’s love for the sights, sounds and sensations of film from the 1890s to today.
