Minions & Monsters introduces us to an entirely new tribe of Minions, who find themselves in Hollywood at the dawn of cinema looking for a new evil mastermind to serve in this rambunctious family treat.

Who is Billy Wilder? 

Multi-Oscar winning and one of the rare talents that would go on to create the golden age of  Hollywood, Billy Wilder was born Shmuel Vilder in 1906 in a small town in what was Austria (now Poland) where his parents ran a chain of cake shops. As a young man he moved to Vienna, where he started in the entertainment industry as a journalist, and then to Berlin where he also found work as a ‘taxi dancer’ for hire before finding work as a screenwriter and producer at Babelsberg Studios. Evading the growth of Nazism in the early 1930s, he moved first briefly to Paris – where he had a first director credit under the name ‘Billy Wilder’ -  and from there, like so many other Jewish filmmakers of the period, to America.

In Hollywood he began again, his first big successes a few years later as co-writer of Ninotchka starring Greta Garbo and Ball of Fire starring Barbara Syanwyck before heading into directing with Ginger Rogers and The Major and the Minor, all now considered classic ‘Billy Wilder films.’ In this season we celebrate just some of this uniquely wonderful work, from romcom Sabrina (1954) which glories in the loveliness of Audrey Hepburn’s wardrobe at the same time as criticising post-war consumerism, to noir melodrama Sunset Boulevard (1950) in which Gloria Swanson plays the bitter, egotistical star for whom we cannot help but feel sympathy. Wilder’s work is so varied, from hard-hitting 1957 drama Witness for the Prosecution (named one of the top 10 courtroom dramas ever made by the American Film Institute) to one of the funniest films ever made, Some Like it Hot (1959) the last line of which gifts us our season title, “Nobody’s perfect!”. His brilliant visual style and unparalleled dialogue reveal humans and their foibles as no other, with honesty, generosity and an incredible wry eye; Discussing screenwriting, Wilder once famously said: “If you see a man coming through a doorway, it means nothing. If you see him coming through a window, that is at once interesting.”

However, they both find themselves falling for their new band’s ditzy lead vocalist and ukulele player, Sugar Kane. In one of her most celebrated roles, Monroe brings irresistible charm and vulnerability to Sugar, giving Wilder’s comedic masterpiece its emotional anchor. Her gorgeous singing, sharp comedic timing and sparkling chemistry with co-stars Lemmon and Curtis, helped Monroe land a Golden Globe.

The Palace Cinema in Broadstairs has operated full-time since 1966, currently with its fourth owners. There are lots of stories about the films, cinema staff and visitors that the cinema has welcomed over those busy decades, as well as the previous lives of the building as a museum, dance hall, summer home for puppet theatres, wheelwrights and much more! 

We look forward to welcoming visitors 11:00-14:00 on Fri 18 and Sat 19 Sept, with free 45min illustrated talks both days at 13:00. Talks cover the history of the cinema and also this year’s Heritage Open Days theme of ‘Everyday Histories’.

The Palace takes the opportunity of ‘Everyday Histories’ to shine an usher torch on the un-sung, and often young, cinema staff like usherettes, rewind boys, assistant relief cashiers and other junior roles essential for all local cinemas from the 1930s-‘70s. Where were their jobs advertised? What was the training, and the uniform? What were the best and worst parts of the job? All will be revealed, including memories and photos from some local residents who contributed to the smooth running of the Palace and many of the other much-loved dreamhouses and flea pits of our corner of Kent.

Baxter, who goes after promotion by allowing his seniors the use of his apartment for their extramarital liaisons. Meanwhile, he hopes to catch the eye of the sassy elevator girl, Fran Kubelik (Shirley Maclaine).

Deliriously funny, The Apartment is also shot through with Wilder’s customary wit and cynicism, creating a bleak vision of estrangement in the modern working city.
