The Palace is delighted to be taking part in Heritage Open Days for the 8th year, opening the doors for free anyone who'd like to have a quick look inside or join us for a free illustrated talk!

The Palace Cinema in Broadstairs has operated full-time since 1966, currently with its fourth owners. There are lots of stories about the films, cinema staff and visitors that the cinema has welcomed over those busy decades, as well as the previous lives of the building as a museum, dance hall, summer home for puppet theatres, wheelwrights and much more! 

We look forward to welcoming visitors 11:00-14:00 on Fri 18 and Sat 19 Sept, with free 45min illustrated talks both days at 13:00. Talks cover the history of the cinema and also this year’s Heritage Open Days theme of ‘Everyday Histories’.

The Palace takes the opportunity of ‘Everyday Histories’ to shine an usher torch on the un-sung, and often young, cinema staff like usherettes, rewind boys, assistant relief cashiers and other junior roles essential for all local cinemas from the 1930s-‘70s. Where were their jobs advertised? What was the training, and the uniform? What were the best and worst parts of the job? All will be revealed, including memories and photos from some local residents who contributed to the smooth running of the Palace and many of the other much-loved dreamhouses and flea pits of our corner of Kent.

Baxter, who goes after promotion by allowing his seniors the use of his apartment for their extramarital liaisons. Meanwhile, he hopes to catch the eye of the sassy elevator girl, Fran Kubelik (Shirley Maclaine).

Deliriously funny, The Apartment is also shot through with Wilder’s customary wit and cynicism, creating a bleak vision of estrangement in the modern working city. Fred MacMurray plays Walter Neff, the sardonic insurance salesman who is willingly seduced by dissatisfied housewife Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) into planning and executing the murder of her newly insured husband.

Edward G. Robinson is Keyes, Neff’s sharp colleague and gruff friend, who smells a rat when Phyllis’ hubby has a fatal train “accident,” qualifying the femme fatale for the lucrative double-indemnity payout.

What follows is a ruthless series of betrayals, mind games and double crosses engineered by one of the screen’s all-time great villainesses, with Wilder’s rampant cynicism deliciously heightened by John Seitz’s knockout black and white cinematography. An unmissible heady brew!

While we wait for our regular pianist Lillian Henley to return from her summer break, we're delighted to be showing the restored full cut of Fritz Lang's iconic 1926 silent classic Metropolis with a pre-recorded symphonic score.

Set in a future city where the lucky inhabitants of gilded society reside comfortably high above the unlucky masses slaving underground, we follow the city leader’s son on an odyssey to the depths in pursuit of Maria, a teacher he met briefly on her visit to the city above. Meanwhile, her evil robot doppelgänger is set loose on a mission to corrupt and destroy the city.

Based on Thea von Harbou’s novel of the same name, director Fritz Lang also claimed to have been inspired by his first glimpse of the New York skyline. Their expressionist, dystopian vision, realised in collaboration with the groundbreaking work of their German Expressionist production designers and cinematographers, results in one of the very greatest and grandest films of the silent era and a prediction of the where modernity and machines might lead.

It is one of the first science fiction feature films, arguably the most influential of all. Countless filmmakers have been inspired by the film’s audacious futuristic imagery, from Frankenstein (1931) to Blade Runner (1982), while the film’s iconic ‘Maria’ robot has inspired numerous performers and designers, from Beyoncé to Thierry Mugler. 

We are delighted to present Metropolis at the Palace accompanied by the recording by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra of Gottfried Huppertz’s original score. We look forward to welcoming back the Palace’s regular piano accompanist Lillian Henley later this year.

Since 2015, Analogue Ensemble have run a programme of artists’ experimental film and expanded cinema in Ramsgate and beyond, inviting local, national and international artist filmmakers to present their work live and engage in post screening discussion with the audience. 

We are delighted to bring our next programme to the Palace Cinema utilising a broad range of media, from site-specific multi-channel sound to mini dv camcorder (video on tape) to 16mm and Standard 8mm photochemical film to HD Video. The work in this programme expands and broadens the idea of what cinema is by reconfiguring it through performance both on and off screen; using the mechanics of both camera and projector to structure the work; prioritising the primary elements of cinema, and the interplay between sound and image.

In summary, this programme takes apart the components of cinema and rearranges them in such a way that reveals new auditory and visual experience.

There will be a post screening Q&A with some of the filmmakers present. All tickets £6.
