In 1810 Ireland, a young woman, whose mother has just died, finds herself accused of being a witch.
The Outcasts has in recent decades assumed a mythical cult status among international folk horror fans. So, we’re extremely excited, as part of our Broadscares Season, to show this long lost classic in only its third ever cinema screening in the UK in over 40 years.
After an initial successful international festival run from Brussels to Geneva and Portugal to Moscow, The Outcasts, much like the initial troubled release of The Wicker Man, was shown for only a single week in a cinema in Dublin with a single broadcast by Channel Four in 1984. Until now, the film was virtually impossible to find, but thanks to a new digital cinema print restoration by the Irish Film Archive, we can finally catch-up with this mythically elusive wonder.
An eerie folklorish tale set in 19th‑century Ireland amid an isolated rural community where poverty and superstition are rife. Maura (Mary Ryan), an introverted farm girl suspected of witchcraft, discovers a mystical world of the imagination through ‘a wild, ungodly man’ – the mysterious wanderer Scarf Michael (Mick Lally) and earns the scorn of her superstitious community presided over by Cyril Cusack, giant of Irish stage and screen, in his final film role.
Combining the poetry of W. B. Yeats, horror, earthy drama and dreamlike fantasy, this is an extremely rare opportunity to see this superbly intelligent and visually stunning directorial debut in its full glory on our cinema screen.
Writer/director Robert Wynne-Simmons (perhaps best known for writing the 1971 British horror classic The Blood on Satan’s Claw and described by iconic Irish actor Cyril Cusack as “having an ingenuity worthy of Orson Welles”) will join us in conversation (via Zoom from Germany) at the Palace on it’s Saturday afternoon screening.
Showing with the short film:
UNRAVELLING (PG) with THE OUTCASTS
Dir Aimee Willemse (UK 2024, 8min)
The invisible illness of elderly Maeve manifests into a malignant physical entity, forcing her granddaughter to confront her worst fears.
