A very rare screening for this eye-popping, restored, psychotronic masterpiece by the father of the Midnight Movie, Alejandro Jodoworsky (El Topo, The Holy Mountain). A lyrical cult Jungian wonder telling the outlandish tale of a former circus artist (played by Jodorowsky’s own son Axel) who flees from a psychiatric hospital to rejoin his armless mother – the leader of a strange religious cult. No synopsis can do justice to the sheer inventiveness, beauty and deeply felt horror of this truly unique film.
After Jodorowsky’s cult 1974 film The Holy Mountain (also shown last year here at the Palace), and the subsequent collapse of his long-gestating adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, Jodorowsky largely retreated from filmmaking. He moved to Paris and began working with renowned artist Jean Giraud AKA Mœbius, writing comics while also honing his shamanastic psychomagic skills.
Approached by producer Claudio Argento’s (Dario’s brother), Jodorowsky developed Santa Sangre delivering this deeply idiosyncratic, intense and hallucinatory epic on a scale which beggars belief.
As if this rare showing of a restored print is not enough, we’re very excited to have an in-person Q&A with Simon Boswell, the composer of Santa Sangre’s towering score, one of the most haunting ever committed to celluloid.
