When THE WICKER MAN was released in 1973, it was not an immediate success, crushing the film’s creator and director, Robin Hardy, who had sacrificed his personal, financial, and paternal duties in pursuit of a film he believed would change his fortune and the trajectory of his career. Fifty years on from its production, Hardy’s lost papers come to his son Justin, also a filmmaker, and his brother Dominic who set out on a journey together visiting the film’s Scottish locations and their own buried memories, revealing the complex nature of independent filmmaking and fatherhood.
Now a folk horror classic, this is an extraordinary glimpse behind the curtain at the reckless, feckless maverick brilliance and ruthless ambition employed by Robin Hardy in the making of THE WICKER MAN and after. This powerful and poignant documentary combines fascinating new details and insider information about the production and history of the film, with a clear-eyed, unflinching, and moving portrait of two grieving sons coming to terms with the legacy of a largely absentee father about whom they have few illusions. In all, a loving tribute to a great and visionary film and to the power of a broken family to find a way to heal.
