Come and join us as we welcome back the wonderful Lillian Henley for a live accompaniment to this month’s Sunday Silent – an attempt to warm everybody up around the ol’ joanna… If you think it’s a bit nippy outside, spare a thought for Ernest Shackleton wedged between two icebergs for over a year. A tremendous, ravishing and tense documentary from Frank Hurley (Symphony of Steel).
When Frank Hurley accompanies Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew on board the Endurance bound for Antarctica, he brings a slew of camera equipment with him. As he spectacularly documents every step of their journey, capturing images never before seen on film, the ship collides with ice and is unable to move. The crew wait in vain for rescue for several months, but eventually have to try and save themselves as they begin to sink. Shackleton must ultimately lead his crew through 800 miles of stormy seas and ice to try and get back to the last outpost of civilisation and safety. It’s awe-inspiring jaw-dropping stuff.
