Some Like It HotU

Marilyn Monroe sizzles opposite Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Billy Wilder’s great comedy.

On the run from the mob, down-at-heel musicians Joe and Jerry sneak out of town by disguising themselves as women and joining an all-female jazz troupe. However, they both find themselves falling for their new band’s ditzy lead vocalist and ukulele player, Sugar Kane. In one of her most celebrated roles, Monroe brings irresistible charm and vulnerability to Sugar, giving Wilder’s comedic masterpiece its emotional anchor. Her gorgeous singing, sharp comedic timing and sparkling chemistry with co-stars Lemmon and Curtis, helped Monroe land a Golden Globe.

Even with her personal life and health in decline, Monroe gave arguably the best and most loved performance of her career. Director Billy Wilder, who had his fair share of problems on set said “All I can tell you is if Marilyn was around today, I’d be on my knees, saying ‘please let’s do it again!”

‘Nobody’s perfect!’ might be the film’s immortal final line, but over 60 years on no other big screen comedy comes quite as close to perfection as this.
