Sound of Falling18

The lives and eras of four young women echo through the walls of a rural German farmhouse, in this ground-breaking, ethereal and kaleidoscopic Cannes Jury Prize-winning portrait of womanhood.

Vignettes of Alma (Hanna Heckt) in the early 20th century, Erika (Lea Drinda) during the Second World War, Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) in the 1980s and Lenka (Laeni Geiseler) in the present day, capture generational shifts and haunting parallels of loneliness, lost innocence and a world in flux.

Through war, social upheaval and four very personal interlinked stories the lives of these women are captured with novelistic intensity and depth as their lives touch each other across the last hundred years. A watchful, ghost-like camera observes them and the small intimate details of their worlds in a film which sets a new standard in how we go about telling stories through film.

A mesmerising, tremendously affecting work of cinematic art capturing the ineffable aching ‘now’ across time, seeing director Mascha Schilinski deservedly heralded as a new giant on the stage of World Cinema. Unmissable.
