Hot off screenings at the Cannes Film Festival where it picked up multiple awards including Best Actress. Emilia Perez is a musical crime drama unlike any other. From multi-BAFTA and Palme d’Or winning director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, The Beat My Heart Skipped, Rust and Bone) with Zoe Saldaña (Lioness, Avatar), and Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building, Spring Breakers).
High powered lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) has more interest in defending criminals than seeing justice done. Feeling undervalued and discontent, Rita is given a way out of her life when she is tasked with helping intimidating cartel boss Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) evade capture by undergoing a gender reassignment operation, both helping them elude the authorities, but also realise Emilia’s lifelong dream of becoming a woman.
Dragged into the events is Jessi (Selena Gomez), Emilia’s wife whom Rita is tasked with taking responsibility for, alongside their two sons, forcing her to deal with the fallout from Emilia’s decision and the reluctance to be dragged back into the life she so desperately wants to be free of.
